Solution:

I developed an illustrated map highlighting Chester’s key landmarks, incorporating drop pins to mark each artist’s location in line with Chester Contemporary’s aim to encourage city exploration. To support visitor engagement, I included coffee mug icons to identify local cafés along the route.

The map’s design is clean, professional and illustrative incorporating the county flower and utilising a consistent pastel colour palette—blues, pinks, and yellows. Research into biennial event marketing revealed that each edition typically adopts a unique colour theme reflecting current design trends.

Approach:

During the design process of the map, it was essential to ensure alignment with the overarching brand narrative. The map was deliberately centred around the theme of walking, encouraging visitors to explore the city, fostering engagement with local communities, and promoting sustainability by supporting a reduction in carbon emissions.

This approach ensures the maps and posters serve as collectable souvenirs, providing a distinct identity for Chester Contemporary every two years.

Overview:

As part of this project, the brief was to design professional wayfinding materials, which encompassed both a detailed map and an engaging poster to support Chester’s new biennial event, Chester Cotemporary.
