Solution:

For Vivian I selected a couple of magazines and ripped out a few pages to use as her calling card. Then on the paper wrote a quote from her with a thick pen and then kissed it whilst wearing lipstick so it left a mark, as it felt authentic to her character. For both Edward and Barney, the Hotel Manager, I researched the style of 80’s/90s business cards, as well as looking at the type of card that would have been used for printing, so that it would have been authentic to the era.

Approach:

For this project the piece was developed with authenticity in mind – considering the period of time, setting and how it would be utilised within the film to determine the methods, materials used and the condition the piece would be in.

The film I chose was Pretty Woman as it’s one of my favourite movies which I’ve rewatched many times and could think of multiple ideas to create a piece of ephemera. I focused on the two main characters and the hotel manager to show different stylings of business cards/calling card.

Overview:

The project brief was to create a piece of cinema ephemera from a movie of our choosing. The piece should be physical, life sized and with exacting attention to detail. Aiming to convey an authentic connection to the movie or one of its characters through the design and production of the piece. The piece should not be a direct copy of something that we already see in the film but should be an incidental object that could be a part of the story.
