Solution:

Handmade miniature bins where possible were created from recyclable products e.g. empty toilet rolls, eco-friendly air dry clay made from natural materials and foam board made from recyclable polystyrene. The maquettes were as environmentally friendly as possible.

The designs for each bin were made starting from cardboard toilet roll, with clay over the top to form the design. I used foam boards for the base and lid so that each design is started the same way, except The Main Square, Safari Kingdom and Lilliput Land which were made from foam board which the cardboard bin would fit inside.

Approach:

The theme park is family-owned, with rides and decorations originally made from wood e.g. some of the older dinosaurs in the Lost World section are handmade. As part of research I visited the park and one of the standout aspects was that the bins were just functional and characterless and did not blend into the environment they were located.

I chose to design characterful bins designed to match the area of the park they were located. The design would maintain their function but would have a fun look and entice children aged 2-13 to use them for their rubbish.

Overview:

In this project there is an opportunity to explore the many roles that design plays within the world of entertainment the theme park. Create a design solution for an aspect of the Gulliver’s theme park that communicates effectively with a specified audience.
