Solution:
The final look for the book nook was an atmospheric centre which drew the audience in, creating mystery and intrigue to explore the books. A book cover wrap was used around the outside of the nook to make it look like a Stephen King book. All book covers used the same format and colour palette of red, black and white foil to bring out the theme of horror. Each book cover featured a simple design on the front cover. The final design was 6 books in total, 3 on either side of the diorama. The whole project was a show piece in the university’s Art & Design Exhibition.
Approach:
To create the book nook I researched other dioramas available but did not feel they brought out the essence and fantasy from his books.
The structure of the book nook diorama was made initially from MDF to give a solid structure as the base. A mixture of model making mediums were used e.g. clay and resin to create the miniatures. After completing initial sketch designs, maquettes of the final pieces were made utilising a laser cutter, 3D printer as well as using a mixture of model making medium, for example, clay and resin as well as using LED lights for the balloon, headlights of the car and the roof of the diorama to create ambience.
Overview:
Create a project that directly focuses on a particular part of the creative industries that interests you. As an avid reader of Stephen King’s books and interested in the concept of book nook dioramas, I chose to create a 3D fantasy world to bring author’s fantasy books alive in a simple format for a bookshelf.
Therefore in this design I explored 6 books and chose features which were synonymous with these books to create miniatures for placement within the book nook. The books chosen were; The Shining (1977), Night Shift (1978), Christine (1982), Pet Sematary (1983), IT (1986) and Misery (1987).
